A return to winning form has expanded the options for Zavite with trainer Anthony Cummings eyeing races like the Hobart and Adelaide Cups.

Zavite won the Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Randwick to record his first victory in more than a year and help ease the disappointment of his spring campaign.

Cummings had hoped the son of Zabeel would fulfil his potential and earn a start in the Melbourne Cup but he failed to make the field.

Blinkers went on in the Listed Australia Day Cup and made a difference to Zavite who led most of the way and held on for a solid victory.

"There's a chance he could go to the Hobart Cup," Cummings said.

"Then there's the Adelaide Cup and perhaps even the Sydney Cup.

"Who knows? Now that he has won it opens things up a bit."

The Group Three Hobart Cup (2200m) is on February 9 with the Group Two Adelaide Cup (3200m) a month later.

The Group One Sydney Cup (3200m) is on April 25, the final day of the Sydney autumn carnival.

Now a six-year-old, Zavite has been a typically slow maturing son of Zabeel.

His younger stablemate Duporth has put things together more quickly and the three-year-old's two wins from seven starts have been at Group level in the San Domenico Stakes and $1 million Golden Rose.

He ran a close third in an 800m barrier trial at Randwick on Friday behind Fist Of Fury and Northern Meteor.

Fist Of Fury ran second to Northern Meteor in the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in the spring.

He is currently edging Northern Meteor for favouritism in the Group One Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 7.

Duporth will begin his autumn campaign in the Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 14.

"He will kick off in the Royal Sovereign and head to the Guineas races," Cummings said.

Among his rivals in the Royal Sovereign Stakes will be Rock Kingdom who Gai Waterhouse describes as the best three-year-old in Sydney.

Rock Kingdom came back from his second in the Magic Millions trophy at the Gold Coast on January 10 to win over 1300 metres at Rosehill on Saturday.

He too will head to the Randwick and Rosehill Guineas ahead of the AJC Australian Derby on April 11.
