The Australia Day Cup is shaping as a key form guide to next month's Hobart Cup with at least two runners being aimed at the Group Three Tasmanian feature.

The Anthony Cummings-trained Zavite, who won last year's Australia Day Cup (2400m) before running second in the Hobart Cup, will follow the same path this year.

Chris Waller has also confirmed the 2200 metre event on February 6 is on the agenda for Come On Cugat provided he runs up to expectations in Tuesday's Listed feature at Randwick.

"We're looking at the Hobart Cup with him if he runs in the first two," Waller said.

Come On Cugat was runner-up to Zavite in last year's Australia Day Cup but will meet him 2.5kg better at the weights on Tuesday.

The six-year-old will also have a weight turnaround of another kind with Waller revealing the normally robust Come On Cugat had been put on a diet this campaign.

He believes it has resulted in the gelding showing a better turn of foot, highlighted by his win over 2000 metres at Randwick earlier this month.

"He is actually a lot lighter than other preparations, about 20 kilos below his normal weight," Waller said.

"It showed last start when he showed a bit more dash."

Jeff Penza has been rewarded for his work with the gelding by being booked for the Australia Day Cup mount.

Waller has also entered his charge for the Auckland Cup but says that race is no longer on their agenda.

Come On Cugat has yet to win from five starts over 2400 metres but has twice finished runner-up over the trip, including his short half-head second to Nuclear Sky in the Stayers' Cup (2400m) at Rosehill last May.

He will be one of two stakes race runners for Waller on Tuesday along with three-year-old filly Dystopia who will contest the Listed Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

A full sister to 2005 Golden Slipper winner Stratum, Dystopia will be making her Victorian debut and showed promise last spring with her three starts highlighted by a win at Canterbury and a third to subsequent Group One placegetter Sister Madly.

Waller elected to take her to Melbourne due to a lack of suitable races in Sydney.

"She's not a superstar but she is a good Listed horse and there are a lack of opportunities up here for three-year-olds," Waller said.

"She's nicely bred so we're trying to win some black-type with her."
