Anthony Cummings is plotting a similar program to last spring for Zavite after questioning whether he is good enough to compete in next week's Caulfield Cup.

The six-year-old son of Zabeel is among eight horses in Saturday's Winning Edge Presentations Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield which exempts the winner from the Cup ballot.

However Cummings believes the Melbourne Cup (3200m) is a more suitable mission for Zavite.

"It looks pretty unlikely that he is going to get into the Caulfield Cup," Cummings told Melbourne radio station Sport 927.

"In all likelihood he is probably not a true Caulfield Cup-type horse.

"At that level I think he is probably going to need the two miles of the Melbourne Cup to step up to that grade."

Last year Zavite missed out on contesting the Caulfield Cup (2400m) when he finished second to the eventual Cup winner Master O'Reilly in the Winning Edge Presentations.

Instead he took a path to the Geelong Cup and finished second to The Fuzz, then missed the Melbourne Cup after finishing last in The Saab Quality (2500m).

Cummings said the Geelong Cup again looked a good target for Zavite should he get beaten in the Winning Edge.

"We thought we would go a similar route forwards to the first Tuesday (Melbourne Cup) by running in this race (Winning Edge), then going to Geelong and taking what comes from those two performances," Cummings said.

Zavite will be having his sixth run this campaign in the Winning Edge.

Last week he was beaten a length when third to Light Vision and Baughurst in The Bart Cummings (2520m) at Flemington.

"He has done very well since his good run last week and looms as one the main chances in this race," Cummings said.

Topweight Maybe Better is the only one of the eight Winning Edge runners not in the Caulfield Cup, which has a field restriction of 18 and four emergencies.

Zavite is equal 26th in order of entry for the Caulfield Cup.

Winning Edge runners Anamato (eq 17th), Dolphin Jo (eq 23rd), Cefalu (eq 29th), Fast Future (eq 29th), Miss Maren (eq 32nd) and the unqualified The Wolverine are still in the Caulfield Cup.
