Robert Thompson has ridden plenty of good gallopers in the past 30 years and he left Doomben on Saturday adamant Youthful Jack has the potential to be the best ever.
Thompson revealed his assessment after he had guided Youthful Jack to an arrogant win in the $150,000 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m).
"That's the difference between good horses and great horses. He was three or four lengths off them one stride and in the next stride he's picked them up," Thompson said.
"He had a bit of a bludge once he hit the front and I have no doubt at all there is plenty of improvement left in him. He could be easily be a topliner."
Starting the well-supported $1.40 favourite, Youthful Jack settled near the rear of the field but quickly gathered the leaders in at the 200 metres to score a soft half length win.
Emerging Toowoomba filly Express Air ($6) finished gamely for second in front of Yatala who flashed late to claim third.
Senior owner Ross Stitt, deputising for winning trainer Allan Denham, said Youthful Jack had accomplished his Queensland goals and confirmed the horse would return to Sydney within days.
"There are plenty of three-year-old races coming up for him next year and he'll have a freshen up for a couple of weeks now," Stitt said.
