Veteran jockey Robert Thompson is hoping he will be legged aboard the 2009 autumn carnival version of Youthful Jack when he reunites with the sprinter at Randwick on Saturday.

Thompson will partner Youthful Jack for the first time since the galloper finished midfield in the BTC Classic at Doomben just over 12 months ago.

They team up again in the $100,000 June Stakes (1100m) for which the four-year-old is an $8.50 chance in first TAB Sportsbet markets.

"I won a couple of good three-year-old races on him and there's no doubt he's very smart," Thompson said.

"Just how well he is going is hard to say."

Thompson's most important victory on Youthful Jack came in the 2009 Group Two Royal Sovereign Stakes at Randwick.

With the exception of a Brisbane Plate win and a Listed placing at Hawkesbury, it's been a difficult road since.

Youthful Jack will be first-up since finishing seventh of 17 at Eagle Farm on November 21.

A record-breaking jockey, Thompson said he had received mixed reports from trainer Allan Denham about two barrier trial hitouts in preparation for Saturday's comeback.

"Allan said his first trial was really good but his second one was terrible," Thompson said.

Youthful Jack was beaten pointlessly in a 900-metre barrier trial on a heavy track at Gosford last month.

"That trial is a bit of a mystery because he usually loves soft going," Thompson said.

Youthful Jack will be one of three Randwick mounts Thompson will have for Denham.

Impressive first-up winner Love Conquers All heads June Stakes betting at $2.30.

Former West Australian sprinter Hay List ($5) and the Warwick Farm-trained Nightofthegeneral ($7) occupy the second and third lines.

Trainer John McNair accepted with Hay List in Sydney in preference to a Lightning Handicap start at Eagle Farm.

Hay List has won eight of nine career starts but has yet to race on going rated worse than dead.

McNair, who scratched Hay List from a Randwick race a fortnight ago because of a heavy track, said he would again withdraw the four-year-old if the surface was too wet.

The Randwick track was bordering on heavy at acceptance time on Thursday after almost 130mm of rain this week but clear skies were forecast through to Saturday.
