Trainer Grahame Begg remains optimistic about Handsupfordetroit's chances in the Group One Randwick Guineas despite a nightmare barrier draw which gave the gelding the widest gate for Saturday's feature.

The Tobougg three-year-old has barrier 18 in the 1600-metre race but with showers forecast up to and on race day, Begg is upbeat about the horse's chances.

"The 1600 metres at Randwick is the best start of any track going around and with the rain on the way the track could be pretty chopped up by the time race seven comes around," Begg said.

"I'm still confident he can do well.

"His work has been very good since returning from Melbourne and he'll run a nice race."

Handsupfordetroit has not raced since he finished sixth to Fravashi in the Group Two D'Urban Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 21.

"He didn't finish that far behind Fravashi and Nicconi who both ran decent races in the Australian Guineas last Saturday," Begg said.

Hugh Bowman, who is returning from suspension, has the ride on Handsupfordetroit.

"Hughie has been riding some of his work and is very happy with the way the horse is coming along," Begg said.

Handsupfordetroit has won two of his five starts and been placed twice but is yet to race over Saturday's distance.

"This is the trip he's been crying out for and he'll show that on the weekend," Begg said.

Joining Handsupfordetroit in the outside gates is the Leon Macdonald-trained Victoria Derby winner Rebel Raider who has drawn barrier 17.

Another horse starting out wide in 15 is unbeaten Victorian Mic Mac who has been installed the $4.20 favourite with TAB Sportsbet.

The Greg Eurell-trained Mic Mac won the Hobartville Stakes (1400m) last start at Rosehill on his Sydney debut.

He remains undefeated from five starts and will again be partnered by his Hobartville jockey Blake Shinn.

The Peter Snowden-trained Caymans, who finished half a length second in the Hobartville, is the second favourite at $4.60 ahead of Youthful Jack at $4.80.

Handsupfordetroit is rated a $23 chance.
