First-up expectations have been kept in check for Howdiddydoit when the stakes-placed galloper resumes at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

"Obviously it's the start of a preparation and he's had the misfortune to draw a wide barrier so it's certainly hard to be overly confident," trainer Rick Worthington said.

"But you never know with a horse like this. He's got a class edge on his side.

"If he can finish in the first three that will be great.

"If not, well that's OK too because he's nowhere near cranked up."

Howdiddydoit goes into the Ashcroft Handicap (1200m) without a barrier trial as part of a Worthington plan to keep the three-year-old on the fresh side during a summer and autumn campaign.

"Early on we are looking at the Canberra Guineas which is over 1400 metres so with that in mind we are giving him a light and easy preparation," Worthington said.

"Hence that is the reason I haven't trialled him.

"Ultimately I think his best distance will be a mile (1600m) so it's important to keep him fresh enough."

Howdiddydoit drew barrier 17 when 18 runners and one emergency were declared and Worthington has engaged three kilogram-claiming apprentice Jessie Whip to ride.

In spite of her inexperience, Whipp has first-hand knowledge of Howdiddydoit's potential as the only rider to win on the horse.

She was in the saddle when Howdiddydoit won a Kembla Grange maiden in August.

Either side of that lone victory, Howdiddydoit has been placed in the Fernhill Handicap and the Dulcify Quality - Listed races which consistently provide strong form references.

Worthington will also give lightly-raced Have One On Me a chance to confirm his promise in Wednesday's AJC Convention Centre Handicap (1400m).

"In a couple of preparations I'm hoping he will be a carnival horse," the trainer said.

Have One On Me overcame difficulties to win at only his second race start over 1000m at Canberra on December 27.

He steps up sharply distance but Worthington says the son of Domesday is already looking for more ground.

"He's not a 1000-metre horse so going up to 1400 metres doesn't faze me," he said.

With regular rider Rod Quinn sidelined with a knee injury, leading apprentice Brenton Avdulla takes the ride.
