Weight-for-age star Whobegotyou is set to launch his third Cox Plate assault in the Group Two Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh said Saturday's 1400-metre event was a good place to start with the six-year-old after he pleased in a jump-out at Flemington last Friday.

"He didn't go too bad," Kavanagh said. "I'm happy with him.

"I will study the entries for Saturday and check on the weather but he will probably run."

Only 13 horses are nominated for the Lawrence which was formerly known as the Liston Stakes.

Owner Lloyd Williams has entered five horses - The BMW runner-up Mourayan as well as Akzar, Base, I'm Imposing and Vesper.

Perth Cup winner Guest Wing, AJC Oaks winner Absolutely and unbeaten Australasian Oaks winner Lights Of Heaven are also among the entries.

David Hayes has nominated former German galloper Budai, a Group winner who has had success in five of his 11 runs and has only been unplaced twice.

Kavanagh confirmed that the Cox Plate was again Whobegotyou's mission after he finished sixth in 2009 and third last year to So You Think.

"He's well and heading for his third Cox Plate and hopefully all goes well and he gets there," Kavanagh said.

A slight ligament strain above a hock cut short Whobegotyou's autumn campaign which comprised a second to More Joyous in the Group One Futurity Stakes and Group Two Blamey Stakes victory at Flemington.

"We pulled the pin on going to Sydney because it was a niggling injury we couldn't get right," Kavanagh said.

"There are not many races for these horses and I won't race them unless they are 100 per cent. I have shown that in the past."

Kavanagh said Whobegotyou would be sparingly raced heading towards the Cox Plate.

"There's one race we are after and I haven't really cranked him up yet," Kavanagh said.

"He's idling along and I will really put a bit of pressure on him in the next few weeks.

"We will space his races and make sure he is at his peak for Cox Plate Day."

Kavanagh said Whobegotyou would try to repeat last year's win the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley on September 10 but may also run in the Group Two Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 27.

"If he runs on Saturday that will give him four weeks to the Dato and we have the option of running him in the Memsie if we want," Kavanagh said.

Last year Whobegotyou had only three lead-up runs to the Cox Plate, finishing second first-up in the Memsie followed by his Dato Tan Chin Nam win and a third to So You Think in The Yalumba at Caulfield.

Meanwhile Peter Moody has engaged Ben Melham to replace suspended jockey Luke Nolen on Lights of Heaven.
