Owner Lawrence Eales hasn't given up on his Cox Plate dream with Whobegotyou, saying he is a couple of lengths better at Moonee Valley than anywhere else.

Punters dropped off Whobegotyou after he ran a weakening 4-3/4-length third of six to odds-on Cox Plate favourite So You Think in the Yalumba Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on October 9, a race he won last year.

"Obviously he struggled at Caulfield but I think the horse is a couple of lengths better at Moonee Valley so we'll find out on Saturday," Eales said.

"I've got confidence he can run the 2040 metres here (at Moonee Valley).

Eales said Michael Rodd, who won the 2008 Cox Plate on Maldivian, didn't have much option but to ride Whobegotyou up closer than usual in the small field in the Yalumba when he settled third behind the freegoing So You Think.

"I think having 10 horses in the field and a few good horses in it, it will be a totally different-run race," he said.

"It looks like there might be a bit of sting out of the ground too which will suit him."

Eales, also the owner of 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, said things don't always go according to plan in big races as he found out when Shocking was sent out favourite in last Saturday's Caulfield Cup before finishing fourth.

"So You Think obviously is a superstar, but races sometimes don't go to plan. I had that experience last week with Shocking," he said.

"Things do go wrong and we'll be sitting there waiting to take the opportunity if they do."

Eales described the lead-up to this year's Cox Plate as quite relaxing compared to last year's experience when he had the pressure of Whobegotyou being the favourite.

The gelding was sent out at $2.80 last year but ran sixth to So You Think, although trainer Mark Kavanagh has repeatedly said the track was too hard for him.

Whobegotyou was beaten for the first and only time at Moonee Valley in the $3 million weight-for-age championship of Australasia.

But he has since made it five wins from six starts at the track with back-to-back victories in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m), a race which has been a good guide to the Cox Plate.

Seven horses have completed that double in the same year since 1978, the latest being El Segundo in 2007.

"There's no pressure this year. It's quite relaxing and it's a whole different scenario," Eales said.

"He's looking great and I think he is in better order this year and we've certainly come back to have a crack."

Whobegotyou eased from $15 to $16 with TAB Sportsbet after he drew the outside barrier in the 10-horse field.

"He got the last option at the barriers but you can't complain about it. Often if you are out wide you are out of trouble," Eales said.

So You Think has firmed overnight from $1.50 to $1.45 with TAB Sportsbet with More Joyous at $7 and Shoot Out at $13 while Zipping is at $16 with Whobegotyou.
