Former Oakleigh Plate contender What's The Mail has given Peter Gelagotis the biggest thrill of his 10-year training career by winning his first race in more than three years.

Formerly trained by Mathew Ellerton and Bill Pallot, What's The Mail was having only his second start for Gelagotis after straining a tendon 14 months ago.

A highly-strung galloper who had never been able to win beyond 1100 metres, What's The Mail has been rejuvenated by Gelagotis as a seven-year-old to win Wednesday's Hussonet at Arrowfield Handicap (1200m) at Sandown.

"This is the highlight of my training career," Gelagotis said.

"This horse was down and out and forgotten and there were a lot of question marks on him coming back."

He said the tendon injury was only one of the concerns for What's The Mail who lost form when trained by Ellerton and wasn't suited with the facilities when trained by Pallot at Bairnsdale.

"He's a bit of a hard horse to manage," Gelagotis said.

"He needs a set routine and a good rider to ride him work because he is so strong.

"The biggest complaint was that he wouldn't relax in his previous campaigns but we have concentrated on making him happy and teaching him to switch off and he's done that.

What's The Mail opened up a winning break in the home straight and held on to win by a length from Straight Legs and La Rocket.

"It is great when you can pull off a result like this," Gelagotis said.

"It is bloody exciting because he's serious galloper if you can get him right."

A winner of six of his 24 starts, What's The Mail was second to Bomber Bill in the Group Three 2006 Rubiton Stakes and the same year was seventh in the Oakleigh Plate and 12th the following year when struggling form.

His last win was the Listed Melbourne FC Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield in February 2006.
