Nearly a third of the way into the season Peter Moody finds himself in front in the Melbourne trainers' premiership, a spot usually dominated by the bigger stables of David Hayes or Lee Freedman.

Moody has cut his numbers in work at Caulfield down from 100 to 64 with the aim of having quality rather than quantity.

He said he had usually been around 12th on the table at this stage of the season but a treble with Umanugget, North East Smile and Sheedy at Sandown last Saturday took him to 22 wins in Melbourne, three ahead of his nearest rival Mark Kavanagh with Freedman (17) third and Hayes (16) fourth.

Moody said his aim was to keep winning stakes races with his strong team of carnival-type horses headed by star four-year-old mare Typhoon Tracy and an outstanding group of three-year-olds including exciting fillies Black Caviar, Headway and Avenue.

"Now I don't want to go on holidays. You want to get out of bed and have a look at them," he said.

"Three years ago when I had 100 horses in work I was driving myself mad and I didn't want to go to work.

"But since cutting the team down by 25 to 30 per cent the quality is there and things are falling into place for us and it certainly makes it easier to want to be around them and get the job done properly.

"If we win the premiership it would be a massive bonus."

The stable will saddle up four runners in three races at Wednesday's Sandown Lakeside meeting including three last-start winners.

Luke Nolen will ride Jewel Thief in the Galleon Hcp (1600m) and Pentoscar in the Palfresco Hcp (2100m).

He will also ride Hussyanna in the Molly's Robe Hcp (1400m) while Dwayne Dunn has the mount aboard Rock Honey in the same race.

Nolen, who has four rides at Sandown on Wednesday, currently leads the Melbourne jockeys' premiership with 19 wins over Damien Oliver (18), Dunn (17) and Nick Hall (17).

Apart from his rides for Moody, Nolen will pilot eight-year-old gelding What's The Mail in the Lady Jakeo Hcp (1200m) for Moe trainer Peter Gelagotis.
