Legendary trainer Bart Cummings has increased his record to seven Caulfield Cups and jockey Brad Rawiller has landed his first with a masterly rail-hugging ride on last year's Melbourne Cup winner Viewed.

Viewed became only the third horse to win the Caulfield Cup (2400m) following a Melbourne Cup victory the previous year.

The last to achieve the rare feat was Rising Fast who won his second successive Caulfield Cup in 1955 after landing the double in 1954.

Cummings praised Rawiller's ride on the six-year-old who jumped from barrier 13 in the 18-horse field and settled back in 16th place before making ground along the inside.

The topweight with 57kg, Viewed was sent out at $13 and raced clear in the straight for an easy 2-1/4 length over stablemate Roman Emperor ($15) with Vigor ($15) a half length away in third.

"It was a great ride. He followed the rail around and saved many lengths," Cummings said of Rawiller who was having his second ride in the race having ridden Weekend Hussler into 12th place last year.

"Running through on the fence assisted him and he got away with it."

Cummings said Viewed had been working very well indicating he could be the best of his three runners, the third of his trio, Allez Wonder, finishing eighth.

Asked whether Viewed could give him his 13th Melbourne Cup he said: "You never know, it's a hard game".

Cummings said he wasn't expecting a big penalty for Viewed who carried 53kg in last year's Melbourne Cup and has 57kg this year.

"He had a lucky run (on Saturday) because he got stuck to the fence. He might get a half a kilo, at the worst he might get a kilo," he said but history says he can expect a bit more.

Cummings won his first Caulfield Cup with Galilee in 1966, while Big Philou won on protest in 1969, Leilani scored in 1974, Ming Dynasty in 1977 and 1980 and Let's Elope in 1991.

It was the second time Cummings had landed the quinella in a Caulfield Cup as 1979 Melbourne Cup winner Hyperno was runner-up to Ming Dynasty in 1980.

Galilee and Let's Elope both went on to take out the Melbourne Cup the same year as their Caulfield Cup wins.

Viewed ran 10th in last year's Caulfield Cup after an interrupted preparation due to a barrier mishap which caused his withdrawal from the Caulfield Stakes the previous week.

Rawiller became the second member of his family to ride a Caulfield Cup winner, his brother Nash having done it aboard Elvstroem in 2004.

Rawiller, who also won the Golden Slipper Stakes aboard Phelan Ready earlier this year, described the feeling of winning the Caulfield Cup as "amazing".

"The name Bart Cummings in racing is folk lore," he said.

Godolphin's Kirklees was the best of the two internationals in the race finishing seventh with the Luca Cumani-trained Cima De Triomphe running 13th.

Predatory Pricer was backed from $8 on course to start favourite at $7 but he was caught four wide facing the breeze and weakened to finish 12th.

New Zealand mare Daffodil ran on well to finish fourth with Fiumicino running a gallant fifth after hitting the front at the top of the straight.
