The widest barrier proved no obstacle to four-year-old Trim who scored a strong win in the Group Three Research Stakes at Rosehill.

Trim ($7.50) started from barrier 15 but jockey Blake Shinn went into Saturday's race full of confidence and was positive from the outset.

The mare eventually ended up one out and one back in the run and found plenty in the straight to get past leader Montana Flyer ($10) to win by a long neck.

Favourite Girl Hussler ($4.60) dead-heated for second with Montana Flyer while Trim's stablemate Shannara was an eye-catching fourth.

Peter Snowden was left deflated after the barrier draw but the trainer was full of praise for Shinn's effort to get Trim home.

"Blake got off her after her last start and said she'll just win next time," Snowden said.

"Then when the draw came out I said, 'well she's no hope', but Blake was positive on her."

Trim has been restricted to just 10 starts so far in her career and Snowden said the Research Stakes (1200m) win was deserved.

"In her career lots of things have gone wrong and it's fitting today that she can win this race when it looked like she wasn't going to get any luck from the barrier draw," he said.

Darley's head trainer has pencilled in the Listed Nivison (1200m) at Randwick on September 25 for Trim while a trip to Melbourne is also on the cards.

"There's one race in Melbourne for her," Snowden said.

"She doesn't track as well that way of going but there's a race down the straight at Flemington for her."

Trim won a Listed 1200m race down the straight during last year's Melbourne Cup carnival.

Melbourne is also in the trainer's sights with Lonhro's sister Shannara who hit the line strongly first-up to finish just over half a length from the winner.

The Group One Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Derby Day is Shannara's main spring target.

"She'll have one more run in Sydney and then head to Melbourne," Snowden said.

"I'm really happy with her run. She's strengthened up, she's not massive but she's better in herself and I think a mile (1600m) will be perfect for her."
