Prominent owner-breeders Geoff and Beryl White are hoping Canberra Guineas winner Tobique can follow the path blazed by their recently retired champion Eremein to the AJC Australian Derby.

The colt scored a barnstorming victory in Sunday's $100,000 Canberra Guineas (1400m) to set himself up for bigger things.

Ridden by Corey Brown, Tobique wasn't spotted until the final 200 metres when he charged home to defeat Logan's Choice by three-quarters of a length with Lavished 1-1/4 lengths away third.

Multiple Group One winner Eremein won the 2005 AJC Australian Derby and Beryl White said Tobique's victory was an emotional one for her and her husband Geoff.

"It's hard to let go of a champion like Eremein and it's taken us a while to get over his retirement but we've always had a big opinion of this colt and we're so thrilled to see him win," White said.

"We're looking at the AJC Derby now, hopefully he makes it there and does what Eremein did."

The Whites share the ownership of Tobique with their children Judy and Greg who manages the Invermien Syndicate.

By Redoute's Choice, Tobique was bred at Invermien Stud by the Whites from their mare Mammoth, a daughter of their champion Marscay, winner of the 1982 Golden Slipper.

Geoff White has no doubts about Tobique running a strong 2400 metres in the Derby.

"He's got staying in his breeding with Mannerism as his second dam and she won the Caulfield Cup (1992), so it won't be a problem."

The Group One AJC Australian Derby is at Randwick on April 11.
