Classy sprinter Let Go Thommo is returning from the longest spell of his career to embark on a campaign geared towards the feature summer sprints.

The notably hard pulling eight-year-old will be given full rein in Saturday's 1000-metre Red Tempo Sprint at Flemington which will be his first start since sixth to Shadoways in the Group One Goodwood Handicap (1200m) in Adelaide on April 12.

Trainer Simon Zahra says the Group Three Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on New Year's Day is the primary target and he hasn't ruled out Let Go Thommo having a crack at winning his second Group Two Carlyon Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on January 23.

"Saturday will be his pipe-opener for the Standish," Zahra said.

"I didn't want to run him over 1200 metres first up because he pulls that hard, but this race will suit him first up.

"He gets to run over 1000 metres, then the Standish and we will go from there."

Significantly Let Go Thommo has never won first-up but has posted two wins from five second-up runs.

The gelding ricked a joint while spelling but Zahra said missing the spring was a chance to give him an extended spell.

"He is an eight-year-old now and needed a good break," Zahra said.

Let Go Thommo has been off the scene for 36 weeks compared to 14 to 18-week breaks between previous campaigns.

This preparation his build up has been slow and steady, and his progress has delighted Zahra.

"He is still a bit big and he might run out of condition first-up but he is going really well," Zahra said.

"He's had two jump outs and won them both, nice and easy."

A former Perth based sprinter, Let Go Thommo's most important of 12 wins in 35 starts was his victory over Tesbury Jack in the 2007 Goodwood Handicap.

He changed stables when Zahra was granted a trainer's licence a year ago.

After finishing second to Here De Angels in the Group Three Rubiton Stakes in January, Let Go Thommo won his second start for Zahra, beating Cox Plate winner Maldivian in the Carlyon Stakes.

"We will see how he goes in the Standish but he might have another go at it (the Carlyon)," Zahra said.

Let Go Thommo is topweight with 62.5kg at Flemington but will get relief with the three kilo claim for apprentice Logan McGill.

Damien Oliver, who twisted his left knee in a barrier mishap at Sandown on Wednesday, will ride the stakes-winning Immortality for trainer Danny O'Brien while apprentice Dean Holland is engaged for Happy Glen who is chasing his fourth win in a row after victories at Moe, Moonee Valley and Caulfield.
