El Segundo will be given a quiet few days leading up to the Carlyon Stakes after coping well with his morning workout at Moonee Valley.

The multiple Group One winner has not raced since his 2007 Cox Plate triumph after which he suffered a tendon injury and underwent stem cell therapy.

He coped well with a barrier trial earlier this month and trainer Colin Little took him to Moonee Valley on Monday morning where he galloped with stablemate Rubijon.

The workout was in preparation for a start in the Carlyon Stakes (1200m) at the Valley on Friday night and Little was cautiously optimistic he would take his place in the Group Two feature.

"He skated round there like it was old home week," Little told Melbourne radio Sport 927.

"He worked with Rubijon. El Segundo gave him a fair start and picked him up.

"He has had a couple of soft trials and we have been umming and aahing over whether he returns in the Carlyon and it's looking very positive."

El Segundo's stablemate Blutigeroo was also among the 11 entries for the Carlyon (1200m) along with fellow Group One winners Light Fantastic and Mr Baritone.

Little said Blutigeroo would embark on a preparation aimed at the $2.25 million BMW at Rosehill on Golden Slipper day, a race he won two years ago.

Australian Guineas winner Light Fantastic won a barrier trial at Caulfield last week, pleasing trainer Mick Price.

Light Fantastic was diagnosed with stomach ulcers after his poor showing in the Underwood Stakes but has since been successfully treated.

The Robbie Griffiths-trained Cocinero will be running in the race for third successive year.

He finished second to El Segundo in 2007 and was unplaced in 2008 when the race was won by Let Go Thommo.
