Talented sprinter Mic Mac is making a sound recovery from a hoof injury but isn't expected to be seen in action until the Brisbane carnival.

Mic Mac was supposed to be among the Australian contingent who ran in the $NZ1 million Telegraph Handicap won by Mufhasa on Saturday.

Instead, he was resting in a paddock after a quarter crack problem brought a premature end to a Melbourne spring campaign.

"Unfortunately he got a quarter crack after his first-up run and that put an end to his spring and our plans for New Zealand," trainer Paul Messara said.

Mic Mac's lone spring appearance resulted in an unplaced run behind glamour mare Black Caviar in the Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield.

The Schillaci was the former Melbourne sprinter's first start since he was on the wrong end of a three-way photo finish to the Stradbroke Handicap.

Messara said he would once more target the Stradbroke with the Group Two winner.

"I'll save him for Brisbane and head towards the three main sprints up there again," he said.

Mic Mac burst onto the scene as a three-year-old, winning his first six races, including the Group Two Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill.

He was unplaced in the Randwick Guineas before returning as a spring four-year-old to claim the Group Two Memsie Stakes, beating established weight-for-age star Whobegotyou.

Mic Mac hasn't won since the Memsie but he consistently measured up during his first campaign for Messara last year.

Formerly trained by Greg Eurell, Mic Mac is owned by Messara's grandfather Maurice Messara who promised to give him horses to train as soon as he got his first Group One winner.

Mic Mac was duly transferred to Paul Messara after Alverta won the Coolmore Classic in March last year.

He was rated unlucky when a first-up third to Melito in the T J Smith Stakes at Randwick.

After finishing on the heels of the placegetters in the BTC Cup and the Doomben 10,000, Mic Mac was beaten a short half head and a long head by Black Piranha in the Stradbroke Handicap.
