Mic Mac will make his first appearance as a four-year-old in Saturday's Listed Aurie's Star Handicap at Flemington following a barrier trial win on a heavy track at Cranbourne.
Ridden by race jockey Damien Oliver, Mic Mac won his trial by a length in 50.44s and trainer Greg Eurell is very much looking forward to his first-up run.
The gelding has won the five of his six starts including the Group Two Hobartville Stakes (1400m) beating Caymans and Desuetude at Rosehill in late February.
"He has the potential to be a very good horse," Eurell said.
"He's had a good spell since Sydney and came in in terrific order. He's going along absolutely spot on.
"He's amongst the big boys now, but he's given us every indication that he's back to his best if not a little bit better so I hope he is and he'll need to be.
"But he's a good sound horse and he's lightly raced, he's only had six runs.
"He'll run in the Aurie's Star first and once we get over he might run in the Memsie."
Mic Mac hasn't raced since suffering his first defeat when fifth to Metal Bender in the Group One Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 14.
"He was at the end of his campaign and he'd been away and it was hard," Eurell said.
"But I honestly think he'll make a miler or even run a little bit further."
Chris Symons rode Mic Mac's stablemate Majestical into fifth place in the same trial.
Majestical will have his first start for Eurell in the Aurie's Star with the trainer aiming the 2008 Cranbourne Cup winner towards the Caulfield Cup.
The VRC attracted 18 entries for the 1200m straight course Listed feature headed by 2007 Cox Plate victor El Segundo with a handicapping rating of 117.
Stablemate, 2009 Sydney Cup winner Ista Kareem, is the next highest ranked on 108 followed by Gran Sasso (104) and last year's Aurie's Star winner Grand Duels and Vigor (both 103).
Trainer Colin Little decided to bypass Monday's Cranbourne trials with El Segundo because of the heavy track and a decision on whether the eight-year-old runs on Saturday would be made after he had a jump out at Caulfield on Tuesday morning.
El Segundo, who has had a history of leg injuries, has raced only twice since his Cox Plate victory.
He was scratched from the Group One Futurity Stakes (1600m) at Caulfield in late February when he was found to be sore in the off-foreleg joint.
Ista Kareem ran last of six behind Cox Plate aspirant Predatory Pricer in a 990m trial at Cranbourne.
