A trip to New Zealand for the Group One Telegraph Handicap at Trentham in January is still firmly in Paul Messara's plans for sprinter Mic Mac.
The five-year-old pleased Messara when he was placed in a 740-metre barrier trial at Randwick on Friday ahead of his spring comeback in Melbourne.
Messara is also planning a Melbourne campaign for stablemate Albert The Fat who finished third in a Warwick Farm barrier trial earlier this month.
"I'm very pleased with both of them," Messara said.
"Mic Mac was ridden by Blake Shinn in his trial last Friday and he'll have another trial before he goes away to Melbourne.
"I'm undecided when he'll resume but there's a couple of options for him before he runs in the (Group One) Patinack Farm.
"After that we're still planning to take him to New Zealand in the New Year."
Mic Mac was originally trained in Victoria by Greg Eurell who won seven races with him before the horse was transferred to Messara earlier this year.
Owner Maurice Messara had always promised his grandson he could train his horses after he won a Group One race which he did when Alverta took out the Coolmore Classic in March.
Mic Mac has raced three times for Messara finishing fourth at his first outing behind Albert The Fat in the Group One BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on May 15.
He then finished a close fifth to Hot Danish in the Group One Doomben 10,000 on May 29 before his third behind Black Piranha and Melito in the Group One Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm in June.
Mic Mac and Albert The Fat will spearhead Messara's spring hopes following the loss of star colt Beneteau who was ruled out of the spring following a paddock accident. Alverta travelled to Europe in June and will be rested until the autumn.
Albert The Fat was formerly trained in Queensland by Eden Petrie who now heads Messara's satellite stable at Caloundra.
The winner of 10 of his 22 starts, Albert The Fat gave Petrie his biggest thrill in racing with his Group One victory in the BTC Cup at Doomben in May.
"Albert The Fat trialled well at Warwick Farm and he'll trial again at Newcastle on Wednesday before he resumes in The Shorts at Randwick," Messara said.
"I'm very happy the way he's come up and he'll go to Melbourne after The Shorts for the Emirates."
The Group Two Shorts (1200m) is at Randwick on October 2.
