New Zealand could be added to the destinations of globetrotting trainer Paul Messara who plans to target next year's Group One Telegraph Handicap at Trentham with Mic Mac.

Messara, who arrived back from England on Tuesday following Alverta's third in the Group One July Cup at Newmarket last week, has pencilled in the 1200m feature in January after the sprinter campaigns in Melbourne during the spring.

Mic Mac returned to work this week following his third to Black Piranha in last month's Group One Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.

Alverta is scheduled to have her next start in the Group One Prix De Gheest (1300m) at Deauville in France next month but it may not be her last race before she heads to the breeding barn.

"We're looking at another Group One race over 1400 metres on Arc day at Longchamp which could possibly be Alverta's last race," Messara said.

"Mic Mac will be going to Melbourne for a light preparation and then to New Zealand for the Telegraph.

"He has just come back into light work and he'll only have two Melbourne runs including the (Group One) Patinack Farm."

Mic Mac was originally trained in Victoria by Greg Eurell who won seven races with the son of Statue Of Liberty before he was transferred to Messara after finishing fifth to Hot Danish in the Group One All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick in April.

Mic Mac has raced three times for Messara finishing fourth at his first outing behind Albert The Fat in the Group One BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on May 15.

He then finished a close fifth to Hot Danish in the Group One Doomben 10,000 on May 29 before narrowly going down to Black Piranha and Melito in the Stradbroke Handicap.

Messara has only been training for four years and had planned to send Alverta or stablemate Battlefield to New Zealand for this year's Telegraph Handicap.

"I was going to send either Alverta or Battlefield over for the Telegraph earlier this year," Messara said.

"We decided against sending Alverta and Battlefield was still on the injured list but it's a winnable Group One race for Mic Mac and he can handles all conditions."

Messara revealed Battlefield would return to work in October following a year off with a leg injury.

Battlefield hasn't started since winning the Listed Ramornie Handicap at Grafton in July last year which took his record to five wins from seven starts.

The son of Choisir was later found to be suffering from an injury to his off hind leg.

"He lost the blood flow to a section of the bone on his hind leg and the surface crumbled," Messara said.

"We had a lot of x-rays taken but the vets said time was the best cure.

"He's still on the sidelines but he's due to come back into work in October.

"He came back into work after a nine months break but he was still sore so we put him back out again."
