His future might lie in the show jumping arena but gallant workhorse Spinney showed he still had some unfinished business on the track with victory in the Tattersalls Club Cup at Randwick.

The eight-year-old is a stable favourite at Crown Lodge with trainer Peter Snowden ecstatic to see the gelding finally get a suitably firm track to add the 2000m Listed feature to his impressive record.

Snowden said retirement was looming for Spinney who had been schooled over jumps in preparation for Saturday's race.

"I'm rapt, he's been a great old horse for a long time," Snowden said.

"He hasn't won for ten or twelve months but bad luck has beaten him on more than one occasion.

"He's a lovely horse to work with and he went over a few jumps this week to sharpen him up.

"He loves the jumping and he's going to make someone a great show horse in the future.

"I'm not sure how long he's got left (on the track) but there's another race for him in a couple of weeks and then we'll see.

"David Brideoake rings up and pesters me every time he runs a bad race because he wants him.

"He's a great horse and I love him to death."

Brideoake is a former Australian representative equestrian and is now a successful trainer in Victoria.

Third in the Tattersalls Cup last year, Spinney was sent out at $11 with Snow Alert the $2.60 favourite.

Spinney stalked the leader Alexander Of Hales from the outset and made his run for home halfway down the straight with Southern Skye in pursuit.

With Kerrin McEvoy riding hard, Spinney summoned his reserves and held off Southern Skye by a short head with Rock Kingdom another 1-1/4 lengths third.

"He just needed a dry track," McEvoy said.

"That's when he's at his best.

"Southern Skye never got level with him and I always thought I had him.

"Everyone in the stable loves Spinney and it's great that he could win."

Alexander Of Hales did well to hold on for fourth but his stablemate Snow Alert was never in the hunt and finished sixth, but only three lengths from the winner.

Spinney has raced 47 times for eight wins and 12 placings for earnings of almost $800,000.

His next assignment will be the Listed Frank Underwood Cup (2000m) at Rosehill in two weeks, a race he finished runner-up in last year to Rabbuka.

His placings include a third in the 2006 Group Two Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes behind Lad Of The Manor and Apache Cat.
