On the anniversary of her Carrington Stakes win, Hairy will be stretched out to almost double the distance in the Tattersalls Cup on New Year's Day.

Trainer Gary Portelli said he was convinced to try the sprinting mare over the 2000 metres at Randwick following her solid performance in the Villiers Stakes (1600m) when she finished seventh, less than two lengths from the winner Palacio De Cristal.

Four of the six-year-old's seven wins have been over the 1100 metres of the Carrington but Portelli believes the time is right for an experiment.

"I was sceptical about her over the mile but seeing how well she went in the Villiers I thought we should have a crack," Portelli said.

"She went as good as anything in the Villiers. She got a check at the 50 metres and kicked back.

"I always thought she was at her best at 1200 metres but the owner Brad Condon asked if we could have a go at the Villiers.

"We changed her training and started stretching her out and she has handled it well.

"We might as well try now. I've seen stranger things happen."

Hairy was one of 10 entries taken on Monday for the Listed race.

Among her rivals will be established stayer Zavite who is being prepared for a tilt at the Hobart Cup in February.

The Anthony Cummings-trained seven-year-old ran a head second in this year's Hobart Cup before going on to win the Launceston Cup.

His next race was a career-high victory in the Group Two Adelaide Cup (3200m).

Zavite was given a few weeks off after finishing well back in the Melbourne Cup and tuned up for his return when second in a barrier trial last week.

Rainbow Styling, who missed Saturday's Summer Cup (2400m), was among the entries as was Delago Star who ran second to him on December 19.

Villiers runners Spinney (3rd), Rabbuka (4th) Lyncean Academy (5th) and Love And Kisses (last) have all been entered for the Tatt's Cup.

Portelli also has a distance query with Gold Trail who tackles the Group One Railway (1200m) in Auckland on Friday.

Gold Trail's six wins have all been over 1100 metres but his trainer is confident the time is also right for him to be tested.

"He's never won over 1200 but if he can run it, they won't catch him," he said.

"He is close to the top of his game and if he is going to do it, it could be now."
