A successful summer campaign in Perth has provided Sniper's Bullet with the right foundation to topple a star-studded field in Saturday's Group One CF Orr Stakes at Caulfield.

Trainer Tracey Bartley believes his gelding is right on song for the 1400m weight-for-age showdown, with the race a perfect opportunity to claim some prized scalps with residual race fitness still on his side.

The Orr will feature the return of Melbourne Cup winners Shocking and Viewed, triple Sandown Classic winner Zipping and 2007 Caulfield Cup winner Master O'Reilly.

Bartley gave Sniper's Bullet only two weeks in the paddock after his Kingston Town Classic win on December 5 before he returned to work to prepare for a first-up tilt at the Orr.

The six-year-old hadn't won for 2-1/2 years before claiming the Group One Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot in November.

He then backed up that victory with another Group One in the Kingston Town Classic (1800m) a fortnight later.

Sniper's Bullet will be out to claim his first win in Melbourne with two Group Three placings his best results from five starts there.

"All is well with the horse, I'm really happy with him and Damien (Oliver) galloped him for me this morning and he was very happy also," Bartley said.

"He'll run really well. I would hope he draws a bit wide so he can press forward. I don't want him getting cluttered away."

Saturday's race could be a defining day for Sniper's Bullet as Bartley is hoping the gelding can gain an invitation to compete in Dubai on World Cup night in March.

"If he gets an invite he's already vaccinated and nominated, everything is in order as it needs to be," he said.

"The final decision will be up to his owners but that's what I would like to do. I'll probably never get another opportunity and he's the right horse. He travels, he eats, and he races on the speed."

Bartley will decide after Saturday whether to run Sniper's Bullet in the Group One Futurity Stakes (1600m) or Group Two St George Stakes (1800m) at his next start.

Dual Group One-winning mare Typhoon Tracy is the horse Bartley fears most in the Orr.

Typhoon Tracy was a brilliant winner of the Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on October 31, taking her career record to seven wins and two placings from 10 starts.

Sniper's Bullet finished third in a 990m barrier trial at Cranbourne on January 25.
