Promising juvenile Eight Thorns is a fast learner and trainer Gerald Ryan is expecting the colt to show him a few more tricks at Rosehill on Saturday.
The grey son of Lonhro is having his second start in the 15th Pet And Animal Show Hcp (1100m).
On debut at Rosehill on October 11, Eight Thorns made up plenty of ground late when 4-1/4 lengths second to trainer Clarry Conners' impressive youngster Movie over Saturday's distance.
"He'd only ever had one jumpout and one trial leading up to that run, so it was a pretty impressive effort," Ryan said.
"And I'm expecting him to make plenty of improvement again on Saturday and show us a little bit more.
"They'll probably go too quick for him again early and similar to last start he'll be hitting the line with purpose."
Whatever happens on Saturday, Ryan said Eight Thorns would head to the paddock after the race.
"I think you'll see the best of him as a three-year-old and this run should give him a bit more of an education and then we can put him out and he can have a think about it," Ryan said.
Stablemate Ahdashim is looking to keep his unbeaten record intact in Saturday's Pages Event Equipment Handicap (1300m).
The Elusive City three-year-old won at Warwick Farm last week over 1100 metres and prior to that dead-heated with Jiale over 900 metres at Newcastle.
"He's a bit of a surprise packet, on pedigree he should not have won over those distances but this trip on Saturday is right up his alley," Ryan said.
"He's a very nice horse with plenty of ability and one I have a lot of time for and he'll continue to get better as the races get longer."
Ryan believes the consistent Equable will also run a strong race but only if the track is dry for the Vale Graeme Pash Handicap (1400m).
The four-year-old was a first-up second to Fist Of Fury at Rosehill on October 11 over 1200 metres.
All three of Equable's wins in his 11-start career have been on good tracks.
"He's sensational on dry surfaces and his first-up run was very encouraging and if he gets the conditions to suit he will go very well," Ryan said.
Stablemate Ready To Lift lines up in the Sydney Pet and Animal Show Handicap (2000m).
She was beaten 1-1/2 lengths by Faulconbridge over Saturday's trip at Rosehill on October 11 when she was blocked for a run.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Faulconbridge claimed his fifth consecutive win with that victory.
"Providing this is a true stayers' test she will go very well," Ryan said.
"I'm not saying she would have won last start but if she got clear running she would have been a lot closer."
