Trainer Robert Pearse is enjoying a nice run with his small team and is expecting the in-form Romany Star to continue the good times at Randwick on Saturday.

The former jockey prepares a team of 12 and is looking forward to seeing the last-start winner in the Sunset Racing December 12 Handicap (1550m).

"Things are going along well for us at the moment, we had this bloke win at Warwick Farm last week and then Promiscuity at Wyong on Tuesday, it's very pleasing for our small team," Pearse said.

"Romany is a nice type and it's no surprise for us to see him stepping up to Saturday grade, he's got plenty of improvement in him and hopefully we'll see that tomorrow."

Pearse is wary of the opposition his colt faces especially impressive last-start winners Fusakeo from the Gai Waterhouse yard and the Guy Walter-trained Rapala.

"This will be a tough test for him but he's done so well since his last run that he deserves a go at this and I think he'll more than hold his own," Pearse said.

Romany Star is by Quest For Fame out of Gypsy Mai who was also trained by Pearse.

"Gypsy was a very tough little mare, she a few in town for us and was one of those horses who would run through brick walls if she had to," Pearse said.

"Fred and Desley Monsour bred Gypsy and also Romany and it's nice to have another good one with them, they are great people and good owners."

"He's still very immature and that's why I've kept him with the three-year-olds, he's got plenty to learn.

"This is an important race for him and one that will give us more of an indication of what we're dealing with."

Fusakeo has won two of his three starts, including a last-start all-the-way victory at Warwick Farm on November 18 over 1300 metres, and is $2.80 favourite in pre-post markets.

The Kris Lees-trained Lotseventy has won his last two starts at Newcastle and is rated at $3 while Rapala, who is also chasing a hat-trick of wins, is at $3.50.

Romany Star is locked with the Chris Waller-trained Pay And Play at $7.
