A Melbourne Cup start for Ready To Lift rests with how the mare performs at Moonee Valley following her unplaced run in the Caulfield Cup.

The mare finished 7-1/2 lengths 11th in the Caulfield Cup won by Viewed after trainer Gerald Ryan changed tack to put her in the field.

His original plan was to run Ready to Lift in Saturday's Moonee Valley Cup (2500m) after the Metropolitan Handicap but her lead-up to the Randwick feature was changed when she received 59.5kg for the Colin Stephen a week earlier.

Ryan opted not to run her in that race and she then had to contend with a very wet track in the Metropolitan won by Speed Gifted.

"The Caulfield Cup wasn't in the original plans and it's fair to say I have regrets about going there," Ryan said.

"She has come through the race well, she didn't do enough in the Caulfield Cup to pose a problem.

"But a start in the Melbourne Cup is not all cut and dried and if she doesn't perform then it will be the paddock for her.

"It hasn't been ideal switching her program around."

Ryan is confident enough in Ready To Lift's ability to handle the tricky Moonee Valley track that he hasn't worked her on the circuit.

"There's been no need to take her to Moonee Valley," he said.

"She has raced well on the Kensington track at Randwick and she's won at Canterbury and they are both tight, turning tracks.

"Ridden properly horses can get home from behind."

Entrusted with riding her properly is Glyn Schofield who has won five races on her and was aboard when she ran second to Scenic Shot in the Brisbane Cup.

Schofield made a commitment to Red Lord in the Caulfield Cup before he knew Ready To Lift was running.

"Glyn is an international jockey who has ridden all around the world and I'm sure he will handle Moonee Valley," Ryan said.

"He would have been on her all the way through if we hadn't changed plans."

Ready To Lift is officially 19th in the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup with several runners above her unlikely to contest the 24-horse race.
