Kerrin McEvoy is keeping a lid on expectations for Peck despite the colt's promise making him a potential standout on stamina for Darley Australia.
McEvoy will ride the Peter Snowden-trained Peck for the first time in a race if the three-year-old lines up against older horses at Randwick on Saturday.
"He's a bit of a spruik horse but he's still got to deliver," McEvoy said.
"The thing against him is he doesn't have any early speed so he has to be ridden the one way.
"A lot depends on tempo ... he needs a genuinely-run race to produce his best.
"I expect Peter will base his decision on starting him once he has a good look at what is in the field."
Racegoers saw the best of Peck when, ridden by Josh Parr, he unleashed a strong sprint against his own age in a 2000m win at Rosehill on June 25.
If Snowden gives his blessing for Peck's campaign to continue over 2400m on Saturday it will provide the Darley camp with an overdue guide on the horse's future as a genuine stayer.
Peck was being set for last month's Queensland Derby but missed a start in the Group One after finishing out of a place in a lead-up race.
A victory against all-comers on Saturday will put Peck in rarefied company among a Darley stable of stars which includes this year's Golden Slipper winner Sepoy and fellow Group One-winning two-year-old Helmet.
Of the 47 races contested beyond 2000m in Sydney in 2010/11, Racing NSW records show Snowden has saddled up just two runners.
He came close to a Group One result came when Retrieve finished second in the AJC Australian Derby.
But Retrieve has since been moved overseas, creating an opening for a stayer-on-the-move within the Darley system.
Peck has been given 54kg on Saturday with the Chris Waller-trained The Verminator heading weights with 62kg.
McEvoy, meanwhile, said he would ride the Darley-owned Matignon for trainer Guy Walter in the two-year-old handicap over 1200m.
Snowden is expected to saddle up Pillory in the same race for Darley with Parr taking the mount.
Matignon had McEvoy on board when she made a winning debut over 1000m on a heavy track at Randwick on June 13.
Pillory landed one of the best betting moves in Sydney for a long time when she scored over 1200m at Warwick Farm last month after being backed from $11 to $4.60 equal favouritism.
