John O'Shea has pointed to a number of factors to suggest Informality can fight out the finish of Saturday's Listed Civic Stakes at Rosehill.

The four-year-old gelding was beaten by 7-1/2 lengths at each of his previous two starts but O'Shea is anticipating a return to Rosehill, and hopefully a slightly firmer surface, to play in Informality's favour in the $100,000 1400m feature.

The last time Informality raced at Rosehill - three starts back on May 8 - he defeated the talented Rothesay over the Civic Stakes distance.

His subsequent two starts were on a heavy (9) at Randwick and then a slow (6) on the Kensington track there and O'Shea said he wasn't comfortable.

"That's what it's all about with him, he hasn't been appreciative of the wet tracks," O'Shea said.

"I know it's (Rosehill) slow (6) at the moment but if it gets to dead (5) then that's in his range.

"We've been very happy with the horse, he's still going well."

Informality has won six of his 15 race starts but his record at Rosehill is even better with three wins from four starts.

"He likes racing at Rosehill," O'Shea said.

"And he hasn't got a big weight in this race. He carried big weights when he was younger but all his wins in open company have been when he's down in the weights."

Informality is on the limit with 53kg and will jump from barrier three in the field of eight with Blake Shinn having his first ride on the gelding.

O'Shea said the Listed Winter Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill in two weeks was also a likely target depending on how he performed in the Civic Stakes.

"All the indicators we use like weight, blood, his work, his coat and his eating are good. There's no excuses for him," O'Shea said.

The Randwick trainer also pinpointed last-start winner Madibagold as a major player in the Civic Stakes.

Madibagold easily defeated Informality on the Kensington track last start but the David Payne-trained runner did finish behind O'Shea's charge at Rosehill on May 8.

The Civic Stakes will be Madibagold's first test in stakes company since the Listed Heritage Stakes in September 2008 but Payne was impressed with the ease of the gelding's last-start win in a 1300m Welter and said the four-year-old had trained on well.

"He won well last start and drops three and a half kilos so that brings him into the race," Payne said.

"He's stepping up in class but he's very well."
