The Peter Moody-trained three-year-old Doubtful Jack has booked himself a shot at next month's $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Trophy with a dominant win at Moonee Valley.
Doubtful Jack was a beaten favourite in his first two runs this campaign but the punters kept faith in the son of Not A Single Doubt on Sunday, backing him late from $3.10 to $3.
Those who supported Doubtful Jack in the Pulse Pharmacy Handicap (1200m) had some concerns early when the gelding was caught three-wide in a speed battle with Take The Rap and Screen.
"I originally thought I was going to get up outside the leader early," winning jockey Dwayne Dunn said.
"Take The Rap poked his head up on the inside which left me three wide but it was too late to take hold of him and go back into the field."
Dunn remained patient until the 250 metres before urging Doubtful Jack to the front, the gelding drawing away from his rivals to record a two-length win after a bit of persuasion from his rider.
"The first couple of hits at the top of the straight didn't get much response but then he knuckled down to his job well late."
Moody won the Magic Millions 3YO Trophy in 2006 with Tereschenko and has no doubt Doubtful Jack will be effective at the end of 1400 metres.
"You would have to say after that win, the Gold Coast race would be a realistic option for him," Moody said.
"I may have waited one run too long to put the blinkers on him but I think he's looking for 1400 metres now and we'll get him up to the Gold Coast."
Moody said he would attempt to get Doubtful Jack to the Gold Coast to help the three-year-old acclimatise to the Queensland conditions but the gelding won't have another run before the January 9 feature.
Mo' Money ($15) tracked Doubtful Jack throughout the race before running on honestly for second, a half-neck ahead of the Dany O'Brien-trained Take The Rap who boxed on well on the fence for trainer Danny O'Brien.
The $3.30 second elect, Screen, dropped out over the concluding stages and failed to beat a runner home.
