Mr Clangtastic's bid for the major Cups in Melbourne this spring is over with trainer Marc Conners confirming the bold frontrunner will be spelled.

The winner of the Colin Stephen Quality two starts ago, Mr Clangtastic was borderline to gain a start in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) on Saturday.

Conners had planned to enter him for the City Tattersalls Club Cup over the same distance at Randwick as a back-up but the gelding was not among nominations for the Listed race on Monday.

"He's going to the paddock. He's had enough," Conners said.

"He worked a bit flat on Saturday morning and instead of pushing him over the top, he'll go for a well earned rest."

Mr Clangtastic kicked off his current campaign in April and was the form stayer in Sydney over the winter and early spring when he strung together five consecutive victories, highlighted by his all-the-way wins in the Wyong Cup (2100m) and the Colin Stephen Quality (2400m).

He finished a brave fifth to Speed Gifted at Group One level in the Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) last Saturday week when he again attempted to lead throughout.

While Conners is disappointed Mr Clangtastic won't be competing in Melbourne this year, he says the gelding's recent performances will provide an important springboard into some of the better staying races in the autumn.

"It probably is (disappointing) but it also gives us a lot of confidence for next time," Conners said.

"We can be a bit more programmed in terms of which way we go.

"There are a lot of lovely races for him in the autumn in Sydney and then up in Brisbane over the winter and it's usually a time of year when it's wet.

"Who knows? We may be able to get him to a race like The BMW or the Sydney Cup next year."
