Trainer Marc Conners admits Mr Clangtastic's chances of gaining a start in the Caulfield Cup are slim but a crack at an even more prestigious Cup remains on the cards.

Mr Clangtastic has pleased Conners since his gallant fifth to Speed Gifted in the Group One Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) at Randwick last week.

The unplaced run ended a five race winning streak which included victories in the Group Three Colin Stephen and the Listed Wyong Cup.

"He's pulled up really good and we'll go and accept for the Caulfield Cup on Tuesday," Conners said.

"I don't think he'll get a run, he's 28th in the order of entry.

"If he doesn't get a run at Caulfield he'll stay in Sydney and run in the Tatt's Cup.

"If he wins the Tatt's Cup there is no reason he won't go straight into the Melbourne Cup."

The Listed Tattersalls Cup (2400m) is at Rosehill on Saturday, the same day as the Caulfield Cup.

Conners was proud of the effort from Mr Clangtastic in the Metropolitan which was won by Speed Gifted, the reigning favourite for the Caulfield Cup.

"He ran well. He's come a long way in a short time and he fought hard to the line," Conners said.

"It wasn't that long ago he was running in restricted races. They can't keep doing it every start."

The Lee Freedman-trained Speed Gifted is the second favourite at $7 on TAB Sportsbet for the Melbourne Cup behind the winner of the race two years ago Efficient.

The John Sadler-trained Efficient underlined his credentials for the great race with a barnstorming win in the Group One Turnbull Stakes at Flemington last Saturday.

Mr Clangtastic is at $151 for the Melbourne Cup.

Seven of his nine wins have been on slow or heavy ground and all his victories have come when he has led and dictated the pace.

Speed Gifted and Ready To Lift are not certain starters in the Caulfield Cup which helps Mr Clangtastic's chances of getting into the field.
