Trainer Marc Conners is keeping his options open for wet track specialist Mr Clangtastic who is almost no chance to run in Thursday's Newcastle Cup.

No rain is forecast and the prospect of a good track will most likely result in Conners steering the stayer away from the Group Three 2300 metre race.

Conners will make a decision on the morning of the race.

"He's a big chance not to run. I wouldn't say he's definitely not going around but there has been no rain," Conners said.

"I'd like it to be a dead track at least.

"He's just been going great and my biggest concern is burning him out on a hard track."

The frontrunning Mr Clangtastic is being aimed at the Group One Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) on October 3 and is nominated for the Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield (2000m) on Saturday.

But Conners said the six-year-old would not go to Caulfield and would most likely be saved for Randwick on Saturday week.

"The Colin Stephen Quality at Randwick could be his next start if he doesn't run at Newcastle," Conners said.

"But I don't have to run him in that, he might go straight into the Metropolitan.

"We don't have to run him just to get fit, he's very fit already."

Mr Clangtastic led all the way last start to defeat Lodge The Deeds by a nose in the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) which was run on a dead track on September 4.

The win was Mr Clangtastic's fourth in a row.

In July, Mr Clangtastic relished the heavy tracks at Randwick to record all-the-way 7-1/4 length and 8-1/4 length wins, both over 2400 metres.

His winning run began at Rosehill on July 4 when he beat Deltona by 3-3/4 lengths.

"We couldn't be happier with the horse, he's done so well since Wyong," Conners said.

Mr Clangtastic is at $14 in TAB Sportsbet's fixed odds markets for the Metropolitan Handicap.

The Clang gelding has not won in 12 starts on a good track with all of his eight victories coming on rain-affected going.

The two horses who filled the placings behind him in the Wyong Cup, Lodge The Deeds and Enzedex Eagle, will clash again in the Newcastle Cup.

Thursday's Listed Tibbie Stakes (1400m) has also attracted a strong field headed by Group One placegetter Subtle Cove, in-form mare Moti and last year's winner Miss Pageantry who has not raced for almost 12 months.
