Trainer Marc Conners will wait until the last possible minute before making a decision on whether Mr Clangtastic runs in the Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick.
A late call to run the bold frontrunner is nothing new for Conners who did the same thing last Saturday before the Group Three Colin Stephen Quality at Randwick.
The track was good that day and Mr Clangtastic won his first race on a track better than dead.
Conners agonised over the decision to run the horse on top of the ground and made the final call early on race day.
Despite the win on the firmer going Conners said he would not risk the stayer on anything better than dead on Saturday.
"If the track's good he won't be running," Conners said.
"We'll wait until the 7:30 scratchings whatever happens.
"We're just sitting around hoping for a bit of rain."
Rain is forecast to hit the eastern suburbs track which was rated a good (3) on Friday by track manager Dave Hodgson.
"We're waiting to see what happens with the weather, we just don't know how much rain we'll get overnight but they've forecast it all week," Hodgson said.
Mr Clangtastic's victory in the Colin Stephen was his fifth in succession.
"The Caulfield Cup is his grand final and if he doesn't run at Randwick he'll go to Melbourne for the Herbert Power," Conners said.
The Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) is at Caulfield on October 10.
Conners is thrilled with the way Mr Clangtastic has come through his last start and said he would have no trouble backing up.
"The horse is super, he's done better than I expected if anything," Conners said.
TAB Sportsbet has Speed Gifted as $3.60 favourite ahead of Ready To Lift ($5) while Mr Clangtastic is at $5.50.
The Gerald Ryan-trained swooper Ready To Lift is coming off a win in the Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on September 12.
The mare's jockey Glyn Schofield says she is in great order.
"She's got a wide gate (17) to overcome but there's good speed in the race and she'll appreciate that," Schofield said.
"Gerald is very happy with her and I'm very happy with her and I'm looking for a big run."
Schofield fears Mr Clangtastic who has won his last three starts at Randwick by a combined margin of more than 15 lengths.
"When Mr Clangtastic is allowed to roll out in front he doesn't often get beaten," Schofield said.
"There's not a great deal you can do with a horse who races off the speed if he does get it his own way.
"You just hope the others don't allow him to get too far away and he's within reach when we are getting home."
