Peter Moody believes he still has a great chance of winning Saturday's William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley with Wanted following the scratching of star stablemate Black Caviar through injury.

Moody and the three-year-old filly's owners had to endure the disappointment of her being found to have some swelling and heat in the inside branch of her off-fore suspensory, ruling her out of racing until spring at the earliest.

"She's terribly exciting and you just don't know where the bottom of her is," Moody said of Black Caviar.

"But to ease the pain we've still got a great stable of horses to attack the (autumn) races and, now that she's out of the way, I think we've got a terrific chance with Wanted.

"There's probably not a horse anywhere who deserves a Group One more than him.

"He's going to be a second to none chance on Saturday. I thought his only downfall was her being in the race with all due respect to Nicconi and the others in the race.

"He ran him (Nicconi) to a long head the other day and it's only going to take one bit of luck in running to reverse that result."

That race was the Group One Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on January 30 when Wanted was runner-up when resuming.

Since finishing 10th to Phelan Ready in the Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill last autumn, Wanted has performed creditably at the highest level.

The Fastnet Rock colt had a tough run when a close fourth to Danleigh in the Group One Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley last September.

After running third to Lucky Secret and Apache Cat in the Group Two Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield, he wasn't far away when seventh to stablemate Headway in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day.

He was spelled after a gallant second to All Silent in the Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) at Flemington a week later.

Moody pointed out that despite the injury to Black Caviar, the stable still had plenty of ammunition for the autumn features headed by last Saturday's CF Orr Stakes winner Typhoon Tracy, Wanted, Headway, Tickets, Duporth, Avenue and Set For Fame.

"So we're pretty happy with what we've got at home. It is gut-wrenching (to lose Black Caviar) but there is still something there to soften the blow," he said.

Black Caviar had been backed in from $1.90 to $1.70 for the William Reid.

But after her scratching on Thursday morning, the David Hayes-trained Nicconi headed betting at $3.10, just shading Wanted at $3.40.

Trainer Chris Waller has decided to run three-year-old colt Shellscrape in the William Reid.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes and Lightning Stakes third placegetter is third pick in latest markets at $5 ahead of Light Fantastic at $6 with Sniper's Bullet at $9 in the eight-horse field.
