John Moloney will be trying to further enhance his already impressive strike rate this season with three runners on his home track at Caulfield on Saturday including in-form mare Flying Ruby.

Moloney, 52, has trained six winners in the metropolitan area since the beginning of August from 36 starters, his latest being Schawmen at Sandown on Wednesday.

His strike rate throughout in Victoria is even more impressive with 22 winners from only 107 starters.

The son of legendary trainer Jim Moloney, who trained the champion Vain, is currently ninth on the Victorian trainers' premiership while in the metropolitan area he is 16th.

Only fellow Caulfield trainer Mick Price with 20 wins from 95 city runners possesses a better strike rate.

Moroney, who has 25 horses in work at any one time at Caulfield with maybe another five in pre-training elsewhere, said he had just enjoyed his best-ever month with nine winners in November.

"We had two winners at the spring carnival with Bonded at Caulfield in October and Flying Ruby at Flemington but deliberately had several horses running at the tail end of the carnival so that they weren't knocked out and we could race on with them for another start or two," he said.

"It's hard to keep the stream of winners coming because they do tire off and then you have your next lot of horses coming in."

Flying Ruby is unbeaten in three outings this preparation, scoring over 1212m at Kyneton, 1400m at Flemington and 1600m at Sandown during October-November.

The four-year-old Rubiton mare drew nicely in barrier three in the 11-horse field for Saturday's NSA Great Strides CF Cup (1400m).

She will be ridden by Peter Mertens who is unbeaten on Flying Ruby having ridden her at her past three starts.

"She's going well and has a chance, but coming back from 1600 metres to 1400 metres is a bit of an essay," Moroney said.

Moroney will also saddle up Lara's Glitter, to be ridden by Mark Zahra in the Powersource Global CF Cup (1400m) and Zyzxx, to be handled by Chris Symons in The 65 Roses Victoria Cup (1400m).

Don Eduardo filly Lara's Glitter is still a maiden after eight starts but has been placed three times including a third at Caulfield and a second at Moonee Valley.

Danehill five-year-old Zyzxx hasn't won since scoring over 1400m at Caulfield on January 26 but finished just three-quarters of a length away when fourth to Gran Sasso over 1300m at Sandown at his latest outing on November 15.

Saturday's meeting is the first at the track since Caulfield Cup day on October 18.

Racecourse manager Jason Kerr rated the track as dead (4) on Thursday morning following 17.1mm of rain this week plus another 12mm of irrigation applied. The rail is out 10 metres.
