It took almost a year but trainer Mark Kavanagh finally got square at Caulfield.
Having watched his Caulfield Cup favourite Maldivian throw one of racing's most expensive tantrums in the seconds before he should have jumped away, Kavanagh produced a horse 51 weeks later to make amends - and more.
Whobegotyou turned the racing wheel full circle for his trainer by winning the Caulfield Guineas and nudging Maldivian's barrier stall bloodbath of 2007 into the background.
The man who has been honing his unusual media technique ever since then proceeded to build up his horse on one hand and play him down on the other.
Kavanagh is an ex-jumps jockey which may be why he likes to be provocative.
After ridiculing suggestions his three-year-old should run in the Cox Plate, Kavanagh outlined even grander plans for a year from now.
"You guys have jumped on him," Kavanagh told reporters.
"It's easy to wrap him too quick.
"He's smart, a real good horse, and I don't think I've got to the bottom of him yet.
"But he's not running in the Cox Plate."
Instead of carrying 49.5kg in the weight-for-age race, Kavanagh is more inclined to run against his own age, over the same distance on the same day in the AAMI Vase under 55.5kg.
Whobegotyou would then go the Victoria Derby, a race with a poor reputation for enhancing careers.
His trainer's supposedly conservative notions were then revealed to include the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. But not until next year.
Whobegotyou's owner Laurence Eales, who rivals his trainer for eccentricity, may yet have something to say about the gelding's immediate future.
"We'll see," said the Cairns earthmoving contractor when asked about the Cox Plate.
Whobegotyou started favourite in the Guineas and won with the authority he was supposed to.
He travelled wide, strode to the front soon after straightening, and ran strongly and truly to the line, finishing two lengths clear of the royally bred Time Thief.
"He could be anything, this horse," Kavanagh said.
"But not yet."
