The faith once shown by trainer Barbara Joseph in an inexperienced Melbourne apprentice can be repaid four years later at Warwick Farm.

Joseph was one of the first trainers to spot the talents of this year's Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Blake Shinn when she booked him to ride Ain't Seen Nothin' in the 2004 Caulfield Cup.

Ain't Seen Nothin' finished midfield and Joseph has been waiting to catch up with Shinn ever since.

"Blake was only 17 when he rode Ain't Seen Nothin'," Joseph said.

"Even then you could tell he was going to be a top jockey. He was so professional for someone so young.

"He rode the mare again in the Mackinnon Stakes."

Although Shinn has been based in Sydney for 18 months as one of Gai Waterhouse's stable jockeys, Joseph hasn't been able to call on his services - until now.

"Because of his commitment to Gai and other circumstances I haven't been able to get him to ride any of my horses in Sydney," she said.

"But everything looks like it has fallen into place this time."

Shinn takes the mount on promising galloper Universal Boy in the Holsworthy Handicap (1300m) on Tuesday.

Universal Boy was heavily supported but was never closer than three deep before finishing unplaced at Rosehill on November 1.

"Unlucky would be an understatement," Joseph said of the run.

"The Warwick Farm race looks perfect for him on paper and let's hope a bit of Blake's magic touch can rub off."

In two country wins before heading to Rosehill, Universal Boy convinced Joseph he was ready to deliver on his early potential.

"I changed his diet a bit because he was having a few muscle problems and his wins at Queanbeyan and Coonamble showed he was heading the right way," Joseph said.

Shinn, who returned from his triumphant Melbourne carnival to boot home a double at Rosehill on Saturday, has rides in six of the seven races on Tuesday.

His mounts include maiden galloper Fivewest, a three-year-old who will carry the colours worn by Shinn when Viewed won the Melbourne Cup.

Fivewest is raced by Dato'Tan Chin Nam and is trained by Bart Cummings.

The colt will be trying to win his first race after six starts when he lines up in the Campbelltown Maiden Plate (1600m).
