Fulmonti begins his winter carnival campaign at Eagle Farm on Monday with trainer Chris Jordan vowing not to be caught out overlooking a Doomben Cup nomination this year.
Fulmonti won the Group Two Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast in May last year but Jordan neglected to include him in the original nominations for the Group One Doomben Cup (2020m) a fortnight later.
"I forgot to nominate him for last year's Doomben Cup and we had to pay a late fee for him to start," Jordan said.
"But I won't be forgetting to nominate him this time."
Fulmonti subsequently finished only seventh to Scenic Shot in the Doomben Cup (2020m) before a game third to the Perth stayer in the Group Two O'Shea Stakes (2400m) at Eagle Farm.
Scenic Shot again proved Fulmonti's nemesis when the son of Montjeu flopped badly on a heavy track to finish last in the Group Two Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm in June.
However, Fulmonti's winter performances gave Jordan the confidence to head interstate for the spring but the gelding injured his back in his first Victorian run following his third to Miss Marielle in the Group Three Craven Plate (2000m) at Randwick on October 3.
"The Melbourne part of the trip was a disaster," Jordan said.
"He hurt his back when came out of the gates and knuckled over in his first run in Victoria in the Cranbourne Cup.
"He did a good job to finish seventh but I had to back off him and brought him home after the Bendigo Cup."
Jordan was convinced all was not right with Fulmonti after he finished in front of one runner in the Listed Bendigo Cup (2200m) won by Zupacool.
Jordan has given Fulmonti one barrier trial to prepare for his first up assignment over 1400 metres in the St. Margaret's Handicap.
"He trialled well to finish third at Eagle Farm last month and was hard held under a big weight," Jordan said.
"This is only 1400 metres but I think he can be competitive.
"He'll get back but I won't be surprised to see him run home and get in the money."
Jordan believes Fulmonti is a stronger horse compared to last year and will give him one more run before he attempts to defend his Hollindale Stakes crown at the Gold Coast on May 8.
