Trainer Chris Jordan completed a family fairytale when Fulmonti scored an upset win in the Group Two Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast.

Jordan, 54, came to Brisbane to train in his own right in 2003, the same year his brother Kerry quit Sydney's training ranks.

"My brother has won this race twice with Corndale and Hunter and he rang me this morning and told me he thought it was time I won it," Jordan said.

Starting at $21, Fulmonti duly delivered in the 1800-metre feature when the six-year-old powered home to down Kiwi stayer Izonit ($14) by a half-neck with gallant frontrunner Sir Slick ($12) a further three-quarters of a length away third.

Fulmonti has promised many times to deliver a feature race win for connections but his biggest win before Saturday was last year's Group Three Chairman's Handicap (2020m) at Doomben.

Jordan is now eyeing the Group One Doomben Cup (2020m) on May 16 but expects to feel the wrath of connections after not nominating him.

"I'll probably get a kick in the arse for not nominating him in the Doomben Cup but we can still pay a late nomination," Jordan said.

Fulmonti, who was runner-up to subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Viewed in last year's Group Two Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm, was well ridden by Gold Coast jockey Joe Bowditch.

"He normally races further back but he had a nice draw so we decided to have him travel closer," Bowditch said.

"He was never going to get beat."

Bowditch's Hollindale Stakes triumph was his biggest victory since he moved from Adelaide to ride four years ago.

"I've won a (Listed) Bernborough Handicap and (Listed) Prime Minister's Cup while I've been here but this win easily tops those," the 32-year-old said.

Bowditch's victory marked a brilliant comeback after his riding career was at the crossroads following a serious race fall at the Gold Coast two years ago.

"I did my cruciate ligament and broke my tibia and had 12 months off," he said.

The major disappointment of the race was last year's Hollindale Stakes winner Scenic Shot ($2.80 fav) who never looked a serious threat and finished fifth.

Jockey Damien Oliver said the six-year-old never travelled kindly and was always under pressure.

"He was always struggling to stay in touch and I couldn't have him any closer," Oliver said.

"He felt the ground and it's pretty hard out there."
