You can't win the prize if you don't have a ticket.

That's the old catchcry Gold Coast trainer Gillian Heinrich is adopting following her late decision to send Queensland filly Sweepstaking to Sydney for the $1 million Golden Rose at Rosehill on Saturday.

Heinrich is looking for her first Group One winner after collecting her biggest prize with former stable flagbearer All Bar One who won the Group Two Sir Byrne Hart Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm in 2006.

Sweepstaking's hopes of heading to Sydney for the 1400-metre Golden Rose looked over when she was beaten by Princess Qualo over 1200 metres at Doomben on August 15.

But Heinrich had a change of heart after Sweepstaking worked impressively at the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

"It's a bloody hard field she's up against with the likes of Phelan Ready, Denman and a few others but she can't win it if she stays at home in her box," Heinrich said.

"She's improved a lot since her last run and it wasn't that bad a run.

"It was her first run for three weeks but when she worked so well on Tuesday I decided to have a go at the Golden Rose."

Heinrich had planned to be in the south before now with the daughter of Not A Single Doubt but was forced to cancel a Sydney trip at the last minute at Brisbane airport.

"She went off at the airport and fell off one of the crates and scraped her legs," she said.

"She had to have a bit of time off after the accident and that's another reason why I thought her last run wasn't too bad.

"I liked the way she hit the line last start."

Sweepstaking was due to be floated to Sydney on Wednesday night and will have her first look at Rosehill when she walks the course on Thursday before a trot and canter on Friday.

Heinrich is undecided if Sweepstaking will remain in Sydney or head to Melbourne after the Golden Rose.

"It depends how she goes. It's the strongest Rose for a long time," she said.

"She's not nominated for the Caulfield Guineas but I had Melbourne in the back of my mind had she missed out on getting a run in the Golden Rose."

Brad Stewart, who has ridden Sweepstaking in all of her four starts, has retained the ride for the Golden Rose.

Stewart will be joined in Sydney by fellow Queensland jockey Stathi Katsidis who will ride the Clinton McDonald-trained Bombay Sling.

The Melbourne colt emerged as a Golden Rose contender following his last-start third to Denman in the Group Three Run To The Rose (1300m) at Rosehill on August 15.

Katsidis hasn't ridden in Sydney since he partnered Chinchilla Rose who finished seventh to Forensics in the Group One Golden Slipper in 2007.

"I was offered the ride when Hugh Bowman knocked it back," Katsidis said.

"He's a chance with the blinkers off and he's an on-pace runner."
