A high temperature means flying filly Combat Kitty will miss Saturday's Randwick meeting but trainer Matthew Smith is still confident she can bounce back in time to cement a Magic Millions start.

An impressive winner of her only start at Kembla Grange on December 18, Combat Kitty was due to run over 1000 metres at Randwick on New Year's Day, two weeks before the $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast.

Smith said as long as she recovered quickly from the setback she would run on January 8 in an attempt to earn enough prizemoney to qualify for the big race.

"She is nice and bright in herself but she missed a gallop this morning and won't run Saturday," Smith said.

"Her blood tests will tell us more but as long as you get these things early and treat them aggressively horses usually come right within 72 hours.

"It's a shame but there's a two-year-old open race the following week and all being well that's where she will go.

"It would be great to get her to the Gold Coast and in a race like the Magic Millions with such great prizemoney."

A daughter of 1997 Magic Millions winner General Nediym out of New Zealand mare Fondle, Combat Kitty was a $150,000 purchase at this year's Magic Millions sale.

She impressed Smith from day one but even he was in awe of her runaway debut win.

That win elevated her to the fourth line of betting for the Magic Millions and she remained there on Tuesday with Karuta Queen the steady $3.20 favourite.

The Neville Layt-trained Karuta Queen left onlookers gasping with her 21-length, course record-breaking victory in a 900m barrier trial at Queanbeyan at the weekend.

Layt said she had come through that test well and the only obstacle to a Magic Millions victory would be the barrier draw with the trainer looking for a gate between one and five.
