Victorian trainer Tony Vasil put Carrara on a QTC Sires' Produce Stakes watch after the colt cut through the mud for an impressive win in the Listed Doomben Slipper on Saturday.

A flashy son of Vasil's former stable star Elvstroem, Carrara charged through the driving rain to post his second win at his third start and his trainer quickly confirmed a seven-day back up into the Sires was high on the agenda.

"I am very tempted to head to the Sires at Eagle Farm next week with him on the proviso that he does well during the week and gets over the run," Vasil said.

Carrara thoroughly impressed his sire's former regular rider, Nash Rawiller.

"That was my first ride on him but he's a push-button horse," he said.

"He began really well and landed in a good spot and he just kept giving every time I asked him for an effort."

Carrara sprinted powerfully when he found clear running in the straight and held off the fast-finishing Choistar to score by a half-length with the lightly-raced Taffy two lengths back in third.

Vasil's intention to back Carrara up in the Group Two Sires is a deviation from his usual pattern with two-year-olds and the astute horseman said he was extremely doubtful the horse would press on to the TJ Smith Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 6.

"I strongly believe in giving two-year-olds plenty of time to mature," Vasil said.

"And although the TJ Smith is a Group One race I'd be more inclined to put this horse away and concentrate on the spring in Melbourne with him."

Later, Sydney gelding News Alert ($4.40 fav) landed a big plunge when he overcame a wide passage to score a first-up win for his new trainer Con Karakatsanis in the Listed Chief De Beers Handicap (1110m).

News Alert was backed from $10 to $5 on fixed-odds betting in the days before the race and justified the solid support when he held off Nuclear Medicine to score by 1-1/4 lengths with Sommersea Drive the same margin away third.

Formerly trained by Gary White, News Alert will stay in Brisbane and Karakatsanis said the Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich on June 13 was a definite option.

"I've got a very good opinion of him - he's a very nice horse," Karakatsanis said.

"I'll weigh things up in the next few days. The Eye Liner looks a nice race for him."
