Star three-year-old Carrara is a chance to take on the older horses at weight-for-age in next month's Group One Orr Stakes.

Trainer Tony Vasil said he would decide after a jump out on Tuesday whether the Caulfield Guineas runner-up would resume in the Listed Zeditave Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on January 26 on the way to the Orr (1400m) at Caulfield on February 6.

"If he pleases me in his trial and pulls up indicating he is sufficiently forward enough, we will run him in the Zeditave," Vasil said.

"He has spelled well and looks terrific and it would be a nice kick off for him."

Vasil said the Orr was an appealing second-up option for Carrara who has a win and two placings from three starts at 1400 metres.

He won the Listed Henry Bucks Stakes at Flemington, ran second in the Listed Bicentennial Stakes in Brisbane and finished third in the Group Two QTC Sires' Produce Stakes.

"Three-year-olds are not disadvantaged at weight-for-age in the Orr and he has proved that 1400 metres is probably his best distance," Vasil said.

Three-year-olds won the Orr Stakes six years in a row from 1998 to 2003 but haven't won the race since.

Vasil said he was unsure whether Carrara was a genuine miler despite his win in the Group Two Bill Stutt Stakes over 1600 metres in the spring and his second to Starspangledbanner in the Caulfield Guineas.

He said he had nominated the Elvstroem colt for the Group One Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 6 but was yet to declare it a firm target.

"I am not completely convinced he gets a strong mile," Vasil said.

"I'm hoping now that he has come back a little bit stronger he can handle it better."

A winner of five of his 10 starts, Carrara was unplaced for the first time in his career at his most recent start when fourth to Hanks in the Group Two AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 24.

Vasil has virtually ruled out any chance of the colt running again over 2000 metres.

"He had the temperament to make you think he would stay as he is nice and relaxed in his races but I probably erred running him in the Vase," Vasil said.

"He had every possible chance after a gun ride by Corey (Brown) and he just didn't run the journey."
