Toowoomba filly Black Minx's defeat in the Magic Millions Trophy has been a bonus for trainer Mark Webb.

Black Minx has remained in Webb's stable and will contest the Listed J Cadell-Garrick Quality at Eagle Farm on Saturday after her owners Neville Stewart, the Toowoomba Turf Club chairman, and Gold Coast property developer Bill Murray had second thoughts about selling her at the recent Magic Millions sales on the Gold Coast.

Black Minx was the leading qualifier for the 1400-metre Gold Coast feature but weakened after being caught wide to finish 14th to Tasmanian Tempest Tost.

Webb was resigned to losing Black Minx in the sale ring had she put in a better performance in the Magic Millions Trophy but her owners' decision to keep racing her has been welcomed with great relief from the respected trainer.

Black Minx's form this campaign has been well below the standard she displayed last season when she won five times to become one of Queensland's best two-year-olds.

"After the Magic Millions race her owners decided against putting her through the sale ring and it's a relief to keep her," Webb said.

Stewart originally bought Black Minx as a yearling at the Magic Millions sales with the intention of selling her at the Ready To Run sale but she was retained after being locked down in her Toowoomba stables for three months during the equine influenza outbreak in 2007.

Webb now plans to send Black Minx to the paddock on Monday for a short break - win, lose or draw in Saturday's 1200-metre feature - and is in two minds about her indifferent form in three starts this preparation.

Prior to the Magic Millions Trophy, Black Minx was convincingly beaten twice by the Allan Denham-trained Youthful Jack when fourth in the Gold Edition Plate (1200m) at Eagle Farm on December 13 before her eighth in the Listed Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) at Doomben a fortnight later.

"Her form doesn't look great but she hasn't had much luck in any of her three runs," he said.

"Her first run was okay when she ran fourth at Eagle Farm but her second run was a disaster when we tried to ride her back.

"In the Magic Millions race she raced on the pace like she usually does but she was never better than three wide."

Webb is undecided about race tactics for Black Minx in her final run this campaign after she drew badly in barrier 10.

"She's won coming from behind in the past but she normally likes to go forward," Webb said.

"The alley is a concern and I'll sleep on what we might do but there's every chance she'll go forward again."

Despite her apparent loss of form, Webb still has plans to aim her for the Brisbane winter carnival.

"She goes to the paddock on Monday so she can come back in time for the winter," he said.

"I've got no big plans for here in the winter except look at some of the big fillies and mares races."
