A brilliant barrier trial win by Toowoomba filly Black Minx has convinced trainer Mark Webb she is on track for the Magic Millions Trophy at the Gold Coast in January.

Black Minx, ridden by Adam Best, clocked 38.51 seconds when she won a 650-metre barrier trial by almost two lengths on her home track at Clifford Park.

"It was probably the best trial win of her career," Webb said.

Black Minx has only been in work for six weeks since she ran the worst race of her career when finishing last to Duporth in the Group Three San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 9.

She had previously started six times for five wins including two victories at Listed level in the McDougall Stakes (1000m) at Eagle Farm in March and the Sir Douglas Wadley (1200m) on the same track in June.

The failure forced Webb to abandon plans to start Black Minx in the $1 million Golden Rose at Rosehill in August and a possible trip to Melbourne for the spring.

Webb is still mystified by her San Domenico performance.

"She settled in well in Sydney but for some reason she was unusually fired up on race day," he said.

Webb is uncertain when Black Minx will make her comeback but is hopeful the Lonhro filly will be ready to resume in the Listed Calton Draught Classic (1200m) at Eagle Farm on November 29.

"She'll have one more trial and if she's not ready for the end of the month then she'll start a fortnight later in the Gold Edition," he said.

"The Magic Millions Trophy is her aim this campaign and we're not looking past that at this stage.

"She's come back from her spell in great order. She's filled out quite a lot but she hasn't grown any taller."

The $100,000 Gold Edition Plate (1200m) is a set weight race for three-year-olds at Eagle Farm on December 13.

Meanwhile, veteran campaigner Mitanni will make his comeback in a 1200-metre Quality Handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday week.

Mitanni pleased trainer John Wallace when fourth in an 1100-metre barrier trial at Eagle Farm.

"He's a nine-year-old now but he's come back in great order and I'll probably run him in the Doomben summer series next month if he comes up," Wallace said.

Wallace blamed equine influenza (EI) inoculations for Mitanni's winter carnival form slump.

"I couldn't get his blood right after he had the third EI shot," Wallace said.

Mitanni had his third shot after finishing a close fourth in the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) won by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Theseo in March.

He failed in three of his four subsequent appearances including a dismal last to Chinchilla Rose in the Group Two QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on May 31 which ended hopes of him starting in the Group One Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in June.
