A horse purchased for $3000 to give a fledgling Sydney stable a racetrack profile will be out to continue a flying start for his trainer at Randwick on Friday.
Dictatorship, who gave Scott Aspery a perfect introduction to training with a Newcastle maiden win, steps into city grade in the Panorama Room Handicap (1000m).
The five-year-old, who has suffered from feet issues, was the first runner Aspery saddled up at the races as a trainer after 7-1/2 years plying his trade in some of Randwick's biggest stables.
"I bought him at a sale in December because I wanted a horse to take straight to the races so I could get my name out there," Aspery said.
Starting at $31, Dictatorship upset the odds-on favourite Hiatus at Newcastle.
"I did think he was the best horse in the race but he went into it without a trial so I suppose it was a bit of a surprise," Aspery said."
Aspery heads to Randwick with an unbeaten record as a trainer after his second starter, a two-year-old called Flight Of Pegasus, won at Wyong last Sunday.
His return to Randwick will be another leg of a racing journey which started as a stablehand for his father in their small stable at Casino before a detour to university life and employment in the finance sector.
"I studied applied science but when I came to Sydney I got a job working for Westpac," the 37-year-old said.
"Job satisfaction more than anything brought me back to racing."
Aspery was licensed in September and has 13 horses in work at Warwick Farm.
"About three-quarters of them are two-year-olds who race for Hong Kong clients and I have (bloodstock agent) Anton Koolman to thank for that," Aspery said.
"He has been a big help in getting my stable up and running."
Aspery has rewarded Robyn Freeman with the city ride on Dictatorship after she gave a faultless display at Newcastle.
"Robyn rides trackwork four mornings a week for me," he said.
