Trainer Kelly Doughty is confident of again proving a big budget isn't a prerequisite to success for owners when Morning Captain chases back-to-back wins in the Listed National Jockey Celebration Queensland Day at Doomben.

In a week when a half-sister to the world's best sprinter Black Caviar was sold for $2.6 million at the Inglis sales in Sydney, Doughty hopes to show the way again for the battlers with bargain buy Morning Captain in Saturday's 1350-metre feature.

The son of Danbird was knocked down to Doughty's long-time client Vince Dickson for just $3000 at the Magic Millions mid-year yearling sales and has gone on to earn more than $120,000 in prizemoney with three wins and three placings from seven starts.

Doughty is hopeful Morning Captain can measure up to some of the better races during the upcoming Brisbane winter carnival after the three-year-old made a successful comeback at Eagle Farm last month.

"I was really impressed with his first-up win and he's improved a lot since then," Doughty said.

"He won the hard way by sitting three wide and carried 59 kilos.

"Once he levelled up to the leader Hidden Jewel he pulled away and won quite convincingly.

"If he performs well in this race I'll run him next in the Gold Coast Guineas."

The Group Three Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) will be run on Morning Captain's home track on May 5.

Doughty is chasing her second victory in the Queensland Day Plate following her success with Tierqualo in 2010.

Doughty's biggest race victory was with Sanderson in the Group Three Gunsynd Classic at Eagle Farm two years ago but she hopes to eclipse that feat with Morning Captain in the Group Two Queensland Guineas (1400m) at Eagle Farm in June.

"If he measures up in his next few runs then I'd love to run him in the Queensland Guineas," Doughty said.

"I'm not sure whether he's quite up to the bigger sprints like the Stradbroke Handicap but time will tell.

"He might do something big before then."

Doughty has had a high opinion of Morning Captain from day one when she rated him a ready-made sprinter.

"He can put himself in a race and make his own luck," she said.

"Tierqualo has won three Listed races but he was a bit dumb and immature in his early days.

"This bloke was a natural from the beginning."
