STAR galloper Theseo could be a surprise starter in Saturday's Doncaster Mile, but the Gai Waterhouse stable will be forced to find a new rider for the six-year-old.

Racing NSW stewards yesterday ruled that Theseo's regular rider, Nash Rawiller, would have to honour a commitment to ride Rangirangdoo, reports The Age.

It says: Waterhouse's racing manager, Mark Webbey, said Theseo - who is weighted at 58 kilograms in the Doncaster - had done better than expected after his fourth in the BMW last Saturday week. A decision on running Theseo, who won the Epsom Handicap over the Randwick 1600 metres in 2008, would be made after he worked this morning.

Stewards ruled on Rawiller's commitment to Rangirangdoo, who is a $6 second favourite, at a hastily convened meeting of the jockey, Webbey, and Rangirangdoo's trainer, Chris Waller.

''Nash rang me in the morning and asked if he could get off Rangi to ride Theseo,'' Waller said. ''It usually wouldn't be a problem because I have the utmost respect for Nash and Gai but this is a $2 million race and I had to look after my owners.''
