Next year's Melbourne Cup is firmly in the sights of young trainer Cieran Maher after the much-deserved win of his top stayer Moudre at Flemington. CM says: 'We've been pretty unlucky all the way through, but as frustrating as it has been, we never gave up on him. This win lifts his rating considerably and that means we can come back next year and have a another go.' Moudre produced his trademark power finish to win the Queen's Cup 2600m by three-quarters of a length from veteran stayer Capecover ($20) with a half-head to Persian Star ($41) in third place. Capecover was the unlucky runner. Capecover, who had trouble securing a clear passage in the straight, is a chance to back up on Saturday in the Grp 2 Sandown Classic.

Cieran Maher will give Moudre a light autumn of just a handful of runs before setting him for an ambitious spring carnival campaign. Moudre has raced just 17 times and the Warrnambool trainer reckons he'll be an even better horse in 12 months. He says: 'Every time he has spelled, he has come back a better horse and that's what I would expect with him for the next year.'
