Melbourne Cup prospect Moudre is back in work and progressing well towards the famous race at Flemington on November 1.
Moudre was high in Cup markets but failed in his last ditch attempt to qualify for a Melbourne Cup start last spring when fourth to Maluckyday in the The Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington three days before the Cup.
He showed his staying potential when he backed up a week after the Lexus to win the Queen's Cup (2600m), again at Flemington.
The gelding had a light autumn of three starts and was spelled after finishing ninth to Shocking in the Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 12.
"Moudre is going well. He's back in work, his action is good and he's just ticking along slowly at the moment," trainer Ciaran Maher said of the rising six-year-old.
"He might resume in a handicap on Memsie Stakes day at Caulfield.
"If he comes up a little quicker we could follow a similar path to last year.
"Hopefully he gets qualified and into the Melbourne Cup which obviously is the grand final for him.
"It would be great to get him there. He's a good horse and he has form around Americain."
Moudre was beaten a long-head when runner-up to subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Americain in the Geelong Cup (2406m).
"If he can get back to similar form I'd be rapt and he should too because he has had a good break and he's a rising six-year-old," Maher said.
"He's a slow maturer and not over raced so you would think this would be one of his better springs."
Maluckyday, who ran second to Americain in the Cup, is the early $12 favourite for this year's race with Sportingbet Australia which has Moudre rated a $31 chance.
